The European Green Deal is the European Union’s response to the challenges of climate change and environmental protection. It aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. To fund these efforts, 30% of the Multiannual Financial Framework must be allocated to climate action.
The European Green Deal promotes sustainable resource use and investment in green technologies and skills. Its systemic approach seeks to integrate environmental protection, sustainability, and climate action into all EU programs and policies.
The cultural and creative sectors (CCS) are integral to this effort. While contributing significantly to the EU’s economy and society, these sectors also have environmental impacts, largely unquantified. The Creative Europe Programme, managed by the European Commission, can help green the CCS by setting a roadmap for reducing emissions and promoting environmental practices. Despite its modest funding, it can drive change, raise awareness of environmental issues, and influence practices within and beyond the CCS.
The strategy aims to mainstream eco-friendly practices, reduce emissions, and achieve net-zero emissions across the Creative Europe Programme and its projects. It aligns with the program’s broader goals of promoting European cultural diversity and competitiveness, offering recommendations for stakeholders to contribute to this green transition. Progress has already begun, with initiatives and measures addressing environmental concerns within the CCS.
